Abstract

There is a system of exchange of sounds in the novels of Qurratulain Hyder. The exchange of sounds is usually found in the daily conversation of illiterate people. They make this exchange according to their region, social set-up and culture. This does not happen with any deliberate effort; rather it happens automatically and naturally. This exchange of sounds shows that human beings make exchanges of sounds according to their social milieus and needs. This behavior creates easiness in communication and also enlarges the canvas of a language. The system of exchange of sounds in the novels by Qurratulain Hyder shows that the range of exchange is not limited in any language. It depends on the speakers how they derive meanings and connotations from words. Furthermore, these exchanges are made in view of some social needs and necessities.
