Abstract

Ancient Punjabi prose constitutes a significant and relatively underexplored dimension of the history and development of Punjabi literature. It not only reflects the linguistic evolution of Punjabi but also preserves the social, cultural, religious, intellectual, and moral traditions of Punjab. This study examines the literary tradition and evolutionary development of ancient Punjabi prose, with particular emphasis on its linguistic, thematic, cultural, and intellectual dimensions. Ancient Punjabi prose provides valuable insights into the early forms of the Punjabi language, including its vocabulary, idiomatic expressions, stylistic features, and modes of expression. It also serves as an important repository of the customs, civilization, lifestyle, folk traditions, and collective social consciousness of earlier Punjabi society. The prose writings associated with Sufi scholars and religious thinkers convey significant teachings related to love, tolerance, compassion, morality, spiritual awareness, and human equality. In addition, these texts played an important role in strengthening the cultural identity and intellectual consciousness of the people of Punjab. The study focuses on selected works, including Pakki Roti, Bohal Namaz, Waaz Nosha Peer, and Maslay Sheikh Farid kay, to explore the evolution, literary significance, and intellectual dimensions of ancient Punjabi prose. The study argues that ancient Punjabi prose is not merely a linguistic or literary heritage but also a valuable source for understanding the historical, social, cultural, and intellectual evolution of Punjabi society. Its contribution to the dissemination of Sufi thought, moral values, social harmony, human equality, and cultural identity continues to remain relevant in contemporary times.
