Abstract

Shaukat Siddiqui is regarded as one of the distinguished writers associated with the Progressive Writers’ Movement. He belongs to that rare group of authors whose works gained remarkable recognition during their own lifetime. In order to articulate his particular worldview, Siddiqui produced a substantial body of work in both the short story and the novel forms.For him, literature should not be confined merely to the themes of beauty and love; rather, it should serve as a medium of positive social change. Consequently, issues such as class divisions, poverty, and social inequalities became central to his creative output. Shaukat Siddiqui began his literary career as a short story writer. After publishing three short story collections, his first novella “Kameen Gaah” appeared. Though written in 1945, it was published much later in1957. This novella was included in the special novella issue of the journal Saip, where it carried the alternate title “Woh aur Uska Saya”. “Kameen Gaah” is a significant contribution to Urdu literature, marked by its realistic orientation. It highlights the contradictions of society, the tensions of class struggle, and the complexities of human psychology. “Kameen Gah” is one such text, reflecting the socio-political realities of its age while simultaneously offering a profound exploration of the human condition.
