Abstract

Deccan or South of India is considered the first marked centre of the Urdu literature. Although the tradition of prose in Urdu is comparatively well behind the poetic tradition but has many strongholds in different eras. Till the late 17th century, the Deccan had a very rich tradition of prose and poetry. After the annexation of the Deccani States to the Mughal Empire, this tradition rolled back to some extent. But we find some interesting specimens of our literature in Deccan in the 18th century as well, although literary historians couldn’t shed any light on the tradition of Urdu literature in Deccan in the 18th century. British colonizers played a significant role in preserving many specimens throughout this century. Many stories in the genre of Qissa are found in different manuscripts of different libraries. Qissa Anār Rāni is one of the moderate-length Qissa from the late 18th century by some unknown author and has been preserved in the British Library, London, UK. Anyone could presume it to be a Deccani Qissa by its language and style. This article introduces Qissa Anār Rāni and presents its critical text for the first time. A brief lingual study and a glossary are also part of this article.
