This paper, derived from my doctoral research submitted to the Department of Urdu, Aligarh Muslim University, presents a critical and comparative study of Modern and Post Modern currents in Urdu poetry, particularly from 1960 onwards. The study examines how the intellectual and aesthetic frameworks of modernism and postmodernism—originally rooted in Western literary thought—were adopted, adapted, and reimagined within the cultural, linguistic, and poetic traditions of Urdu.Modernism in Urdu poetry ushered in themes of existential angst, individual alienation, and stylistic innovation, while postmodernism disrupted notions of unity, meaning, and authorship through fragmentation, irony, and intertextuality. By analyzing the works of selected poets, this paper highlights how these global literary movements reshaped Urdu poetic expression and enriched its thematic and structural possibilities.The paper situates this transformation within a broader socio-cultural context and offers insights into the evolving relationship between global literary paradigms and indigenous creative sensibilities. It contributes to ongoing scholarly conversations on literary modernity, identity, and the negotiation of meaning in postcolonial and multilingual literary traditions
