Abstract
Alfred Woolner was a renowned Sanskrit scholar who made significant contributions to the promotion and study of Sanskrit in Punjab. As a professor and later the Vice-Chancellor of Punjab University, Lahore, he played a crucial role in establishing Sanskrit schools in the region, ensuring that students had access to Vedic texts and classical Sanskrit literature. He organized and facilitated performances of original Sanskrit plays, helping to preserve the theatrical traditions of ancient India. Woolner also built an extensive collection of Sanskrit books, which remains the largest repository of Sanskrit literature in Pakistan today. His dedication to Sanskrit studies led him to travel across Punjab, fostering interest in the language and its rich heritage. Through his efforts, he firmly rooted Sanskrit scholarship in the land, leaving a lasting academic and cultural legacy.
