Abstract
This is the Arabic rendition of Dr. Khurshid Rizvi’s Urdu article about one of the great poets of modern Egypt Mehmood Abul Wafa (1900-1979), whose poems were included in an anthology of Modern Arabic Poetry chosen as a full-length subject for Master’s in Arabic at the Punjab University Oriental College, Lahore when Dr Rizvi was doing M.A. in Arabic. The poem Aashiqatul Qamar (Moon Lover) by Mehmood Abul Wafa enchanted Dr Rizvi with its poetic craft and captivating style of rhyme and rhythm, as it absorbed him in its splendid pursuit of expressing meaningful thought. Years after when Dr. Rizvi earned an excellent teaching career to his credit, and befitted a member of the Syllabus Committee, he was entrusted the task of selecting modern poetry for B. A. in Arabic at the University of the Punjab. He shared with the students the meaningful and superlative pieces of poetry by adding in Aashiqatul Qamar with other select poems from the contemporary Arabic literature. This article comprises a concise history of Mehmood Abul Wafa and his poetic career, as it consists of a serious study of a number of his poems to highlight his beliefs and tendencies, as well as his poetic thoughts and notions. The study comes up with the fact that Abul Wafa is not a philosopher, for believing in might and power. Rather, he clearly asserts that he does not follow a certain school of thought. Instead, he adapts to his own mood, style and thinking. Yet, he does not reject other thoughts and ideologies which he benefits from in an open manner. The article presents plenty of specimens for different moods of the poet and various shades of his poetry.
