Abstract

This paper seeks to  study  the  movement for  an  Englsih translation of the Qur'an, initiated in the subcontinent by Shibli in 1910 and reinforced by Jam'iyyat al-Ulama Hind during the heyday of Shuddhi Movement in 1920s. This focuses, in particular, on the role of the Shibli Nu'mani besides the role of Jam'iyyat al-Ulama Hind and Majlis-i Qur'ani (Simla). On Shibli's persuasion, Sayyid Hussain Bilgrami  undertook the job of translation, but he could translate only 16 parts of the Qur'an, which  remained unpublished.  With the upsurge of Shuddhi movement during 1920s the Jami'ayyat al-Ulama Hind turned to the English translation of the Qur'an under the supervision of Sayyid Sulayman Nadvi, however due to the financial constraints, the dream remained unfulfilled and so was of Majlis-i Qur'ani (Simla). The paper argues that the movement initiated by Shibli and reinforced by Jam'iyyat and Majlis-i Qur'ani led Abdul Majid Daryabadi's English translation and commentary of the  Qur'an.
