Abstract
Urdu language was introduced in Kashmir through Punjab. Chiefly, it was popularized by the traders who travelled across the sub-continent for commercial purposes. Soon Urdu became the lingua franca in Kashmir. The graduates from Aligarh Muslim University and other educational institutions situated out of Kashmir played very positive role as well in this regard. Urdu was declared official language of Kashmir back in 1889. After partition, again it was declared official language of Kashmir under article 145 of the constitution of State of Jammu and Kashmir. It remained so until autonomous status of the State was abrogated in 2019 by the Indian Government unilaterally. The article focuses impacts of Urdu language on Kashmir’s religious and cultural composition.
