Abstract

In Urdu poetry, the concept of beloved is very complicated. Under the influence of Persian poetry, beloved's gender is not defined. It gives shades of male as well as female in different scenarios. This situation is complex for female composers. Masculine form for beloved suits them but there is no tradition of female lover in Persian and Urdu poetry. It is why Urdu poetesses incline towards Indian tradition of love poetry according to which beloved is male and lover is female. Love, loyalty, sacrifice and obedience are naturally feminine traits. These sentiments for beloved from female are common in Indian love tradition. This article sheds light on Hindi elements in Ghazals by Urdu poetesses.
