Abstract
This article examines the vision of Dr. Abu al-Nasr Muhammad al-Khalidi regarding the celebrated Arab intellectual ʿAmr ibn Baḥr al-Jāḥiẓ, based on his essay featured in Maḍāmīn Khālidiyya. The study begins with an overview of al-Jāḥiẓ’s life, literary contributions, and his pivotal role in the development of Arabic prose and rational thought. It then introduces Dr. Abu al-Nasr as a modern scholar of Arabic language, literature and culture, whose works blend literary analysis with cultural and historical insights. The central focus of the article is Dr. al-Khalidi’s portrayal of al-Jāḥiẓ as a polymath whose writings reflect a deep curiosity about foreign cultures, especially India. Through linguistic traces, references to Indian plants, perfumes, customs, and philosophical ideas, the essay underscores al-Jāḥiẓ’s global vision. This reveals his open-minded approach to knowledge and his appreciation for the diversity of civilizations. The article critically analyzes the methodology employed by Dr. al-Khalidi in his study and evaluates the strength of his arguments. It concludes by affirming that reading al-Jāḥiẓ through such intercultural lenses offers a richer understanding of his legacy and confirms his enduring relevance in Arab and global intellectual history.
