Abstract
The most important and developed field of applied linguistics is language teaching and learning. It is so closely related to language teaching that applied linguistics is generally considered to be synonymous with language teaching. It has a major role in foreign language teaching in particular. A person familiar with linguistics can do language teaching better. Because of this importance, applied linguistics is sometimes considered synonymous with language teaching. It is a fact that one cannot teach a language unless he is familiar with all the aspects of the language. The need for linguistics in language education institutions is becoming acutely felt. Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) is the biggest industry in this field. Currently, the trend of learning Urdu is increasing due to the popularity of Urdu in Europe, America, Russia, China, Japan, and Gulf countries etc. In this article, issues related to Urdu as a foreign language like objectives, motives ,curricula and current situation in Pakistan alongwith the linguistic aspects of Urdu learning, especially linguistic skills, Phonetic system, structure, vocabulary and problems faced by foreign students have been discussed.
