Abstract

The composition of chronograms (Tareekh Goi) is an art based on numerical value of the letters. In 19th century it was so popular that almost every poet was not only well versed in it but also composed it in Persian, Arabic and Urdu languages to prove his poetic excellence. A famous Urdu poet Dagh Dehlvi also composed chronograms and rendered more than two hundred chronograms. The chronograms of Dagh are found in his three Diwans and various published and unpublished books. This article deals with this art form with special reference to Dagh Dehlvi's.
