The short story started in Kashmiri language in the middle of the 20th century with the arrival of Progressive Movement. Kashmiri writers and poets were greatly inspired by this movement and started writing in Kashmiri language. Real life presentation of the prevailing situation is the hallmark of their writing. Akhtar Mohiuddin was the first short story writer of Kashmir who portrayed the contradictions of the middle class and the pulsating life among the backward class in his short stories. He started writing in Kashmiri and contributed greatly. It’s why he is remembered to be the pioneer of Kashmiri short story.
