Abstract
There may be a bit difference of opinion among researchers about the life history of Lallah Arifa. But her status as the first classic poetess of Kashmiri literature is non- controversial. Her spiritual poetry has no clue of her religion. So it can't be guessed from it whether she was Muslim or non- Muslim. However, it is apparent from her "Wakhs" (a genre of Kashmiri Poetry) that she was preacher of Shivisim which was prevalent in those times. Her sorrows and miseries of life are obvious from her poetry. Mostly, her approach in poetry is spiritual. Her style is marvelous. No doubt, in the light of available texts, she is rightly considered the first classic poetess of Kashmiri language.
