Abstract
Urdu, after Persian, is the great repository of Islamic literature. Hence it stood for the Muslims' identity in the Sub-continent. It faced resistance by the Hindu majority who wanted promotion of Hindi written in Devnagri script. This was unacceptable for the Muslims who could not even think of abandoning it as it had become identical to the Muslims of the Sub-continent. Urdu has also been one of the causes of establishing of Pakistan. Unluckily, due to clashing interest of the ruling elite, Urdu could not become official language of Pakistan. This article sheds light on the efforts employed for making Urdu official language as well as reviews the institutions established for this purpose.
