Abstract
Dictionaries like grammar and compositional books are helpful to learn and comprehend a language especially the foriegn ones. The Persian language remained the literary as well as official language of the Indo-Pak Subcontinent in the past many centuries. The indigenous took special interest in learning Pesian and excelling in it. There appeared a good number of dictionaries of Persian in the Subcontinent. Madar al Afazil is one of them which was written in the reign of the Mughal emporer Akbar by a profound scholar of Persian and Arabic.This dictionary is an important lexicographal document. Former Principal of Oriental College Dr Muhamad Baqir edited its manuscript and published it in four volums from Punjab University, Lahore. The article is an introductory study of the said dictionary.
