Jamil Jalbi is a well known historiographer, critic, linguist, translator and editor. He has written history of Urdu literature in four volumes which got immense praise from critics. Jalbi has also compiled very first masnavi of Urdu namely Kadam rao padam rao for which he was awarded with DLit. His translation of western poets and critics greatly admired by literary circles of Urdu. Besides, he has also compiled dictionaries of Urdu as well. He has edited Divan e Nusrati and Divan e Hasan Shauqi. He has done great service to protect and promote old Urdu literature. This article is an overview of his services as a compiler.
