Abstract

Stanza generally stands for piece of poetry extracted from long poem. Stanza also has its place as a different genre. On the other hand Urdu has a formation of poetry parallels with stanza in many respects. It is called Musammat, defined by number of lines in a single part of a long poem. It starts from a three liner called Musallas and goes forth generally to a ten liner called Muashshar. Stanza offers to opt different ideas and same is the case with Musammat in Urdu. Stanza and Musammat share many aspects of content and form. This article deals with the different forms of Musammat and common features of Stanza and Musammat besides pointing out their respective peculiarities.
