Abstract

Mullah Mhuammad Qasim Mashhadi was a famous poet of the Shahjehan's period. He was born at Mashhad, Iran. When the atmosphere in Iran under the Safvid Rule became non conducive for poetry, number of poets including Mullah Qasim immigrated to the Subcontinent. Great Persian poet Mirza Sa'ib Tabrezi was his mentor in poetry. Mullah Qasim stayed at the state of Bijapure. He did not join any royal court as he preferred to compose popular poetry. He was one of the pioneers and representatives of the Sabk-e-Hindi style of Persian poetry. His verse is rich in diversity of topics, techniques and other poetic beauties. Lucidity, flights of thoughts, delicacy, and richness of meanings are a few salient features of his poetry. He was survived by a Diwan.
