Abstract

What is the significance of Intizar Husain in Urdu fiction? One methodological approach to addressing this question is to demonstrate through a structural analysis of his narratives the role they play in imparting depth to discourse, style, and more broadly, to the overarching literary tradition. In our view, one of Intizar Husain's major contributions lies in his liberation of Urdu fiction from the constraints of colonial temporality, which prior to his intervention was unconsciously embedded within the robust tradition of Urdu short fiction. This examination is crucial because before Intizar Husain, at least within the domain of Urdu fiction, the capacity to perceive temporal frameworks beyond the contemporary moment was lacking. In this article, through the analysis of one of Intizar Husain's narratives, I will show how his fiction, by synthesizing multiple epistemologies, fundamentally reconceptualizes the understanding of human subjectivity beyond any singular or monolithic interpretive and temporal framework.
