Punjab University, Lahore is the oldest and largest educational institute in Pakistan. It had been established during the British rule in 1882. While University Oriental College was already established in 1870 under the umbrella of Punjab University College, which was established in 1869. Oriental faculty was the major faculty of University of the Punjab at the time of its establishment. Punjabi (Gurmukhi (Department was started at the University Oriental College in 1879. In 1928 Syndicate of Punjab University had approved the establishment of research departments of Urdu, Hindi and Punjabi and also sanctioned three posts of Lecturers for these subjects. Dr. Mohan Singh Diwana was the pioneer lecturer of Punjabi Department. 1947 Gurmukhi Department had been closed. In 1970 Department of Punjabi Language and Literature was reestablished. Where regular classes of MA Punjabi were started and also research work at MA and PhD level was started. The department started its six monthly research journal “Khoj” in 1978 and six monthly “Punjab Culture” in 2021. The department has been converted in to the Institute of Punjabi and Cultural Studies on 22^nd January 2021. The Institute is now offering BS, M Phil, PhD and Diploma Courses in different disciplines of Punjabi Language, Literature and Culture. Institute has its own library. From where more than twenty five thousand books, transcripts, research journals, and thesis are available. The institute is presently the largest institute of the world with regard to the studies and research about the Punjabi Language, Literature and Culture.
