Abstract

Mirza Dagh Dehlvi enjoys a unique place in Urdu literature. The message of universalism in his poetry combined with his philosophical approach grant him a stature that has yet to be achieved by any other Urdu poet. In this article, an effort is being made to give an overview of Dagh poetry, examining it by different yardsticks. The purpose is to highlight the salient characteristics of his personality as well as those of his poetry. The dominant characteristic of his poetry is his logical style of narration. His poetry contains unparalleled pieces of imagination. The use of words shows a great command of language. It is hard to decide whether Mirza Dagh became great for writing his ghazals or if Urdu ghazals were honoured to have a poet like him. There is no doubt that he is the brightest moon in the galaxy of classical Urdu ghazals.
