Abstract
Muhammad Ali Jauhar is an important leader of our Freedom Movement. He has been instrumental in arousing political awareness among the Muslim. His dynamic and conspicuous political engagment eclipsed the poetic dimension of his personality. Nevertheless, he is rightly bracketed among the distinguished Urdu poets. Though the tradition of arousing political awareness is deep seated in the lyrical poetry, however Jauhar and his contemporaries especially Hasrat Mohani gave it a new orientation. Jauhar's lyrical flavour is drenched in politics, religion and nation, therefore his poetry reflects the agony of the Muslims. The concept of freedom is projected as the representative of the spirit of love in his poetry. Sacrifice---a dominant element of his personality reflects in the form of 'philosophy of martyerdom' in his poetry.
