Abstract

This article deals with the particular form of modernism that sculpts the poetics of Meeraji's Nazm. Meeraji pioneered modernist theme, style and technique in Urdu Nazm avoiding all kinds of clichés. Asserting the basic preamble of modernity that man is the measure of all things, Meeraji ascertains the paradoxes of centrality of human agency as well. Duality is one of the major themes of modernist poetry that has been dealt with by Meeraji employing the context of mythology. On one side Meeraji discerns the void that presented itself as the destiny of modern man; on the other he seems to have been transforming it into womb i.e., a source of unusual creative energy. It has been asserted that Meeraji's modernity dispels the common perception of the modernist poetry as being apolitical.
