Abstract

Although song writing in Urdu language is as old as Urdu poetry itself yet it was never recognized as a literary form. Reason being, the songs were only preserved in the memories of the masses as a folk heritage. However, in the second quarter of the twentieth century, renowned Urdu poet Hafeez Jalandhry who was already famous for his extraordinary talent, style and diction inclined towards song writing and succeeded in establishing it as an independent genre of Urdu poetry. It's why he is truly called the father of modern song writing in Urdu. He not only wrote famous songs himself but also got the song writing registered as a literary form.
