Abstract

Works of Urdu's two famous novelists Bano Qudsia and QuratulAin Haider on tragedy personify varying shapes and forms as both of their familial and literary backgrounds were different. That is why their interpretations of life and its meaning are different. Bano Qudsia highlights the female impotence in our society as a major aspect of her work on tragedy while QuratulAin Haider does the same with the divided state and values of the subcontinent. Haider criticizes the educated class of the society when it strays from its core values. She has presented religious difference, cast system and racial discrimination as a form of tragedy. The partition of the subcontinent has also been portrayed as a form of tragedy.
