Abstract

Slang words are found side by side with standard words in every language of the world. They help to express a situation in which standard words fail to do so. It’s why slang words get inroads into a language and it is very likely that with time they may attain a level of standard-ness. Like any other language, slangs abound in the Punjabi language. The article briefly defines the main feature of slang and tries to differentiate the linguistic terms cant, jargon and argot. Since no work on the Punjabi slang has been undertaken so far, a specimen has been given at the end of the article to pave the way for work in this direction.
