Abstract

Maulvi Ferozuddin Daskavi (1864-1907) was an eminent scholar of Urdu, Persian and Islamic Studies. He wrote a number of books in Urdu on the different topics of Islamic Studies and Urdu grammar, but his dictionaries are the living reference of his scholarship. He compiled the dictionaries of Arabic, Persian and Urdu. He is one of the scholars who initiated the compilation of dictionary in the Punjab. His unilingual dictionary Urdu Lughat-i Ferozi has an importance in the early dictionaries of Urdu. That is why, He has earned an importance in the history of lexicography of Urdu. He also compiled dictionaries of Persian and Arabic. Urdu Lughat Ferozi has not only an importance in the history of lexicography, it is also an important scholarly work in this field, especially having legal and literary terms of daily use. It was written for the students, but it also shows light to the scholars of Urdu language and literature.
